Based on some stuff I’ve been reading (and let’s be real, some quick Google searches, lol), the 990 has this, like, *legendary* status. Apparently, back in the day, New Balance wanted to make the *best* running shoe EVER. No pressure, right? And the 990 was born.
The thing is, it’s not just about performance anymore (though, let’s face it, they’re comfy AF). It’s become, like, a *statement*. A normcore icon. What even IS normcore? I always forget. It’s like, trying to look normal, but in a *stylish* way? I dunno, man. It’s confusing.
And the collabs! Oh my god, the collabs. Shohei Ohtani (major league baseball player!) got his own 990v6? Exclusively in Japan? That’s kinda bogus for those of us not in Japan, just sayin’. And Action Bronson’s “Hi-Pink/Royal Blue” joints… those are wild. Like, seriously out there. Not sure if I could pull those off, tbh. They’re dropping for $220! Sheesh, gotta start saving, I guess.
Then there’s the whole “Made in USA” thing. That’s supposed to be a big deal, right? Like, better quality and stuff. But apparently, it’s only a small part of their overall sales. Kinda makes you wonder if it’s all that important, or just good marketing. I mean, I’m not knocking American craftsmanship or anything, but… is it *that* much better? I’m still on the fence. Maybe I’ll buy a “Made in USA” one just to see.
And let’s not forget the Teddy Santis 990v6. Focuses on, like, authentic stories of real people. That’s a cool idea, I guess. But at the end of the day, it’s still a shoe, right? A comfy, stylish, kind-of-expensive shoe.
